A direct purchase is buying physical precious metals outside a retirement account, in your own name, with insured delivery to you or storage at a depository under your direct ownership. No custodian, no contribution limits, no IRA rules.

What is a direct purchase?

A direct purchase is the simplest way to own physical metal: you buy it with after-tax money, in your own name, outside any retirement wrapper. There's no custodian, no contribution limit, and no IRS account rules, just a transaction between you and a dealer.

What you do with the metal afterward is your choice: take insured delivery, or place it in depository storage under your direct ownership.

Why do buyers choose direct purchase over an IRA?

Control and simplicity. You hold the metal personally, can sell or move it whenever you choose, and face no distribution rules or RMDs. For buyers who want physical possession, or whose funds aren't in retirement accounts, it's the only structure that fits.

The trade-off is tax treatment: gains on personal metal are taxed as collectibles when you sell, without the deferral an IRA provides. Which structure serves you better depends on where your money sits and what the metal is for.

How does a direct purchase show up in practice?

You receive a written quote, fund the order, and the metal ships insured to you or to the depository you selected. The documentation, invoice, product list, storage confirmation, is yours to keep, and it's what you sell against later.

A term on your quote you don't recognize?

Ask a specialist to define it, in writing, no commitment.
