Storage & Delivery

Secure storage with clear documentation.

Approved depositories, segregated or commingled storage, and depository insurance coverage, with delivery to your door available for directly owned metals; IRA metals remain at the depository until distributed.

Two ways to hold

Segregated or commingled allocation.

Both are held at an approved depository and documented. Each is covered only as provided by the depository's specific policy, whose insured party, limits, exclusions, valuation method, locations, and transit terms should be confirmed in writing. The storage difference is how your specific bars and coins are held.

Segregated

Your exact bars and coins, held separately

  • The specific serial-numbered bars or coins you purchased.
  • Stored physically apart from other clients' metals.
  • Returned to you as the same pieces on distribution or delivery.
  • Typically carries a slightly higher storage fee.

Commingled

Same quantity and quality, stored together

  • Metals of like kind and weight held with other clients' holdings.
  • You own the same quantity and product type you purchased.
  • Documented in your name at the depository.
  • Typically the more cost-efficient option.

Two contexts

IRA storage vs. direct-purchase storage.

Inside an IRA

Required at an approved depository

Precious metals held inside a self-directed IRA must remain at an IRA-approved depository. You cannot take personal possession while inside the IRA, doing so is treated as a distribution.

Direct purchase

Your choice: storage or delivery

Metals purchased outside a retirement account can be shipped to your door insured, held in approved storage, or a combination of both. You can move metals in or out at any time.

Documentation

What you actually receive.

Real ownership means real paperwork. Every Dormy storage arrangement produces documentation you can verify independently.

Depository confirmation

Written confirmation from the depository listing your holdings, storage type, and account reference.

Insurance coverage

The depository's policy may cover loss, theft, and physical damage, subject to its insured party, limits, exclusions, valuation method, locations, and transit terms. The terms for the specific arrangement are shared in writing and should be confirmed before storage.

Periodic statements

Statements from the custodian (for IRA metals) or depository (for direct-purchase storage), issued on a regular schedule.

Audit standards

Approved depositories operate under periodic third-party audits and standard chain-of-custody procedures.

Withdrawal on request

You can request in-kind delivery of your metals at any time. For IRA metals, the withdrawal is processed as a distribution by the custodian.

No hidden storage

Metals are never held by Dormy directly. Storage is always through an independent, approved depository.

Before you decide

A note on 'home storage' claims.

Advertising that suggests you can legally hold IRA precious metals at home in a personal safe, sometimes called a "home storage IRA" or "LLC IRA", carries meaningful risk under current IRS guidance. Dormy does not recommend or facilitate those arrangements. IRA metals stay at an approved depository.
Storage and insurance fees are disclosed in writing before your account is funded. Fees are typically billed annually by the depository or custodian.

Common questions

Storage questions we hear most.

Dormy coordinates with a short list of established, IRA-approved depositories in the United States. The specific facility and city are shared once we understand your preferences.

Most approved depositories permit scheduled client visits with proper identification. We can help arrange this if you'd like to see the facility.

Metals in approved depository storage are covered by commercial insurance, but the insured party, limits, exclusions, valuation method, locations, and transit terms depend on the actual policy. Coverage details are provided in writing for the specific arrangement and should be confirmed before you store.

Directly owned metals are held in your name; IRA metals are held for your benefit through your custodian, segregated or by allocation. That structure supports treating the metal as client property rather than an asset of the depository, but an insolvency outcome depends on the custody agreement, records, identification, segregation, liens, actual control, and governing law. The depository's insurance covers loss, theft, and physical damage only as provided by the specific policy.

Submit a delivery request through Dormy or directly to the depository. For IRA metals, delivery is processed as an in-kind distribution by the custodian.
