Pricing & What to Expect

Understand pricing before you buy.

Spot, premium, retail, bid, and spread, explained calmly so you can evaluate any quote (ours or anyone else's) with confidence.

The vocabulary

Six terms that explain almost every quote.

Spot price

The global market price

The live wholesale price for one troy ounce of a metal. It moves continuously during trading hours.

Premium

The cost above spot

What you pay above spot to acquire a specific product. Reflects minting, distribution, product scarcity, and dealer margin.

Retail (ask) price

What you pay to buy

Spot + premium. This is the number you'll see on any quote from any legitimate dealer.

Bid price

What you receive when selling

What a dealer will pay you when you sell metals back. Usually close to spot for standard bullion.

Spread

Ask minus bid

The round-trip cost of owning a product, buying at ask and selling at bid. Standard bullion has tight spreads; premium coins have wider ones.

Quote window

How long a price is good for

An indicative quote states its expiration and conditions before placement. You authorize on the recorded compliance call; Dormy places the transaction directly afterward, and the price locks on placement. An approved existing-account payment arrangement does not reset that locked price.

What you'd otherwise have to call to learn

Typical premium ranges.

Most dealers make you call to learn these. Here are the ranges Dormy actually works in, indicative, and they move with market conditions.

Product

Standard bullion

Government-minted coins & refiner bars

Typical premium over spot

5–18%

Notes

Sourced from wholesalers and marked up transparently. Some larger gold bars may price below this general range. American Silver Eagle bullion premiums can reach 18% over spot. Product, quantity, availability and market conditions matter. This indicative range is not a fixed quote or guaranteed ceiling; the actual written, itemized quote governs the quoted premium.

Product

Specialty & proof coins

Typical premium over spot

Up to 39%

on some products

Notes

Higher premiums and wider resale spreads. Available only on explicit request, with the premium and estimated buyback disclosed in writing before purchase, never recommended as a default.

Ranges are indicative and fluctuate with market conditions, product availability, and order size. Every Dormy quote is written, itemized, and time-stamped, see what a quote looks like below.

What to expect

What a Dormy quote actually looks like.

Every quote is written, itemized, and time-stamped. Nothing is hidden in the total.

Every quote includes

Line-by-line transparency

  • Product name, quantity, and weight.
  • Current spot price at time of quote.
  • Premium per unit and total premium.
  • Metals subtotal (spot + premium), with applicable additional charges itemized separately.
  • Estimated buy-back (bid) so you can see the spread.
  • Quote expiration time.

What you won't see

Things Dormy doesn't do

  • Bait quotes that change once you commit.
  • Undisclosed "shipping and handling" spread padding.
  • Pressure to swap standard bullion for premium coins.
  • Countdown timers or manufactured scarcity.
  • Vague "market pricing" without an itemized breakdown.

Completed hypothetical quote · USD

All numbers are hypothetical USD, not current pricing, an offer or a guarantee. The subtotal includes assumed $0 insured shipping, but excludes any applicable taxes, storage, custodian, payment and other charges. Confirm all applicable charges before commitment.

Product
American Gold Eagle bullion; one troy ounce fine gold per coin
Quantity
10 coins; 10 troy ounces fine gold total
Spot reference
$2,400.00 / troy ounce (10:42 AM ET)
Premium per coin
$135.00 (5.625%; about 5.6% over spot)
Purchase price per coin
$2,535.00
Metals subtotal
$25,350.00
Assumed insured shipping
$0.00 (included in this example)
Subtotal including assumed shipping
$25,350.00
Estimated same-time buyback
$2,380.00 / coin; $23,800.00 total
Purchase minus bid
$1,550.00; about 6.1% of purchase cost
Indicative quote expires
10:57 AM ET (15 minutes; hypothetical)

The $1,550 purchase-minus-bid difference is about 6.1% of purchase cost, not a required price-appreciation figure. Before additional costs, resale proceeds would need to increase about 6.5% to recover $25,350. This does not predict future spot prices or dealer bids.

Inside a Gold IRA

Additional fees you should know about.

An IRA involves a custodian and depository, each charges disclosed, industry-standard fees. Dormy shares these in writing before you fund the account.

Custodian setup

A one-time fee to open the self-directed IRA account with a qualified custodian.

Annual custodian fee

A flat or asset-based annual fee for account administration, reporting, and record-keeping.

Depository storage

Annual storage fee charged by the depository, varies by segregated vs. commingled and by metal type.

Wire & processing

Nominal fees for wires or paperwork the custodian processes on your behalf.

Insurance

Typically included in the depository storage fee under an all-risk policy.

No hidden Dormy markup

Metals pricing is the same whether inside an IRA or purchased directly. IRA custodial and storage fees are set and billed by the custodian and depository. See how Dormy is compensated.

Before you act

A word on pricing volatility.

Precious metals prices fluctuate throughout the trading day. An indicative quote can expire or change before placement under its stated conditions. A new client must have cleared funds before Dormy places a purchase. An existing client with an account may, by arrangement for that order, be given a few days to cover a purchase. You authorize on the recorded compliance call; Dormy places the transaction directly afterward, and the price locks on placement. Approved later payment does not reset or reprice that locked price. On a purchase, the placed price is your authorized price or lower; on a sale, it is your authorized price or higher. Past price movements do not guarantee future results.
Dormy, Inc. does not provide investment, tax, or legal advice. Any discussion of premiums, spreads, or fees is general in nature and is not a recommendation to buy, sell, or hold any specific product.

Common questions

Pricing questions we hear most.

Premiums reflect minting, distribution, product, quantity, availability and market conditions. The indicative standard bullion range is 5–18% premium over spot. American Silver Eagle bullion premiums can reach 18% over spot; some larger gold bars may fall below the general range. This is not a fixed quote or guaranteed ceiling. The actual written, itemized quote governs the quoted premium.

Generally yes, bar premiums step down at common weight thresholds (10 oz, 1 kilo, 100 oz for silver). Dormy quotes reflect these breaks automatically.

Typically a short window ranging from minutes to a few hours, depending on market conditions. The exact expiration and conditions are printed on each indicative quote. That window applies before placement, not to a transaction whose price has already locked.

Dormy provides a written quote first. You authorize the purchase or sale on the recorded compliance call; Dormy places it directly afterward, and the price locks when the transaction is placed. No. Metals are priced the same. IRA accounts add custodian and depository fees that are disclosed in writing.
